Pong gets up Pukehina noses

A Pukehina dairy farmer whose effluent spraying is getting up the noses of some residents is within his rights, says the BOP Regional Council.

Pollution control officers received a complaint last week about the smell from effluent spraying at a Pukehina dairy farm, says council communications advisor Jessica Somerville.

'I passed along this information to one of our Pollution Prevention Officers and they have confirmed that a complaint was received about effluent discharge at a dairy farm at Pukehina last week.

'As a result of the complaint the site was visited by one of the Pollution Prevention team who was satisfied by that the operation was complaint with their consent and that the effluent was being discharged appropriately as per normal dairy farm operations,” says Jessica.

SunLive received complaints from residents complaining the farmer was spraying effluent for up to 10 hours a day over the weekend in the westerly – with the smell particularly affecting houses between 65 and 105 Pukehina Beach Parade.

'Yesterday [Sunday] we enjoyed our first bit of summer weather since New Year,” says one resident. 'Mr Farmer began his effluent disposal approx 10 a.m. and was still going by nightfall.

'This morning [Monday] he had started up by 8.30am. It's affecting our ability to maintain the lifestyle we pay for out here, and some residents believe it is affecting their overall health. Headaches, sore eyes etc. No way could you BBQ in the evening, no one can eat amongst the stink of sour sewage.”

Properties on the market suffer if there happens to be viewing when Mr Farmer has decided to spray poo everywhere, says one resident.

'We should not have to leave the district to enjoy a day in the sun or on the beach. We pay to live here and are entitled to peace and enjoyment of our properties. No one will speak up because 'Mr Farmer” has clout in this very tight knit community,” says a resident.

'A couple of hours a day – perfectly fine, no problems, during work hours – fill your boots Mr Farmer.

'But, spraying foul, putrid smelling cow poo on Saturday and Sunday for 10 hours a day in stinking hot temperatures without a break – Not ok.”

The farmer named in the complaint did not pick up the phone when called.

Perhaps you should have taken more time to investigate your other surroundings than a bit of water. You'd complain if no milk or beef equally. Simply a case of buyer beware.

Why?

The effluent spraying on paddocks is a change from years before, the farmers cant leave it in a settling pond and can tip it in the creeks. So I guess the end result is the consequence of living semi rural. Don't like it then move into an apartment at the Mount or something.

Overit

City folk don't mind riding on the backs of the overseas funds that farmers bring in. TV's, electricals, etc would all be dearer. Wake up townies. These folk work very hard for their money. He was going about his legitimate business.
