Enjoy Christmas - but drive smart

The NZ Transport Agency have released a pre-Christmas message urging people to enjoy the festive revelry whilst remembering to be smart and avoid drinking and driving.

With the holidays just around the corner, New Zealand is entering the season of parties, barbecues and other well-earned celebrations.

And as those celebrations are often marked with a few drinks, this is also the time of year when drink-driving becomes a hot topic of conversation.

Last year, New Zealand's legal blood alcohol limit for adult drivers was lowered from 80 to 50mg per 100ml. Does this mean you're more likely to be caught drink-driving this summer?

NZ Transport Agency strategy manager Lisa Rossiter says the answer is simple: 'It's up to you.

'If you choose to get behind the wheel after drinking too much alcohol, you need to take responsibility for the choice that you make and own the consequences of that decision,” she says.

'Those consequences can range from losing your licence to much worse. Drink-driving is a depressingly common contributing factor to deaths and serious injuries on our roads.

'The simple fact is that drinking alcohol affects your concentration, coordination, reflexes and judgment – and the more you drink the more all of those things are negatively affected.”

At the old limit of 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, a driver is around 16 times as likely to be involved in a fatal crash as the same driver with a zero blood alcohol level.

'That's why the law was changed last year to reduce the limit to 50mg,” explains Lisa, 'bringing New Zealand into line with many other developed countries which have similar or lower limits.

'The lower alcohol limit for driving is supported by a clear majority of New Zealanders, as well as by the Automobile Association, emergency room physicians and many others.

'The reason that most people support the lower limit is because they understand that the old limit was far too high and it allowed people to legally drive while they were impaired.”

New Zealand has had a zero-alcohol limit for drivers under the age of 20 since 2011, recognising the additional risks of youth and inexperience.

Lisa says the NZ Transport Agency/Police Know your limit television advertising campaign will run throughout the holidays to remind drivers that the legal limit for adults is now lower.

'When you're behind the wheel these holidays, you need total concentration, good coordination, rapid reflexes and the ability to make correct judgments and decisions,” Lisa says.

'We don't want anyone's holiday marred by an avoidable tragedy, so please remember that the less you drink, the lower your blood alcohol concentration, and the less likely you are to crash.

'Deaths and serious injuries on our roads are not inevitable, and every one of us has the power to make good decisions which will keep the roads safer for everyone.”

What about telling heavy vehicles to have some patience and stop trying to intimidate car drivers who are driving at perfectly sensible speeds? Truck drivers are the worst for tailgating. It must feel nice and safe up in that cab 2 feet behind someone who is already driving at the limit?

Manners? You've got to be kidding. No-one here is willing to give up their square inch of asphalt.

Nearly all heavy vehicles are 90 kph speed limited they have GPS tracking and dash cams so Maildrop you should use your mirrors and watch your speed

Hey Maildrop

You seem to have a huge problem with trucks when in actual fact they have a pretty good record of only 2.2 crashes per 100 million km travelled. I have very rarely seen a truck driving stupidly but have seen many car drivers doing exactly that. And no, I am not a truckie and 9 times out of ten if you can be tailgated by a truck YOU are going TOO SLOW as most are engine limited to 9o kph.

Totally agree Mike Greer

Ive tried to tell Maildrop this but you just cant tell some people. I have a dashcam full of bad car drivers. No trucks on their yet. The police would have a field day ticketing trucks if what Maildrop said was true.. Clearly its not!

Not all heavy vehicle drivers are angels, but they're head and shoulders above most car drivers. Where does the intelligence disappear to when there is a truck or bus ahead of you? Much as people go to the boat ramp for a good laugh at our local boat owners antics when launching and retrieving their prized possessions, so can you get your fill of horror and astonishment by standing at the Bayfair roundabout and watching people testing their nerve and stupidity, trying to enter and leave this roundabout at peak traffic times. A car starts and stops a lot quicker than a truck or bus and yet there are still D***heads that see beating them in traffic as a challenge. WHY???
