The meeting will include presentations from Mayor Glenn Leach, Mercury Bay Community Board chair Paul Kelly, Department of Conservation representative Gemma White, Peter Johnson of Ngāti Hei and Hahei Ratepayers/Stakeholders Group chairman Bill Stead.
'Questions will be taken after the presentations, with council and DOC staff in attendance providing answers where possible.
Issues that will be covered off in the meeting include addressing car parking and traffic over peak summer around Hahei and the development of the first Great Walks route.
The first Walk once complete will move visitors between Whitianga Cooks Beach, the Stella Evered Reserve, Cathedral Cove, Hahei, Te Pupuha Recreational Reserve's blowhole site and Hot Water Beach.
Stage 1A of the Walk from Ferry Landing to the blowhole site south of Hahei, is funded through the district council, DOC, Lotteries Significant Fund and Trust Waikato, while Stage 1B from the blowhole to Hot Water Beach remains unfunded.
Council is working with Ngati Hei around a track over the backdunes at Hot Water Beach and looking at potential funding avenues, which it views as an important next stage but a piece of work that is longer term.
The Great Walks Project public meeting takes place at the Hahei Community Hall this Saturday, November 28, from 10am-12pm.
