Targa Bambina: best viewing spots

This weekend the ‘Ultimate Road Race' returns to the Coromandel and lucky spectators will get unfettered access to view all the action.

The Targa Bambina 2015 Rally starts this Friday and the Coromandel leg of the series will cover about 280km of closed road stages from the Coromandel Township to Waihi.

This weekend Targa fans will have access to all areas, whether that's out in the countryside to watch the cars fly past, or at the parc ferme where they can have a natter with the drivers and crew.

Communications manager Matt Greenop says leading up to the event most of the enquiries Targa receives from fans are to find out where the best spots will be for viewing the rally.

'Finding the right spot to camp out and watch the impressive variety of cars racing in Targa is not as easy as it is with other types of motorsport.

'Despite the way it sounds, that's not a bad thing - Targa doesn't charge for access to prime viewing locations and we don't have an army of angry folk wielding clipboards.”

But thanks to Targa, below are a few suggested spots around the Coromandel Peninsula for the thousands of tarmac rally followers to check out during weekend's Targa Bambina.

Road closures are also included below:

FRIDAY, MAY 15:

Starting in the Bombay Hills at 8am, the convoy will reach the peninsula for the Coromandel Climb stage at about 4pm.

The stage will start at the intersection of Tiki and Whangapoua roads and cars will cross the range along State Highway 25 to Te Rerenga, finishing at Castle Rock Café and Winery.

If you don't mind a long walk then the best viewing will be from the corner of Whangapoua and Quarry roads.

The convoy will then make a quick stop at Mercury Bay Multisport Park, before travelling to the Whitianga Marina carpark where all the cars will be parked up overnight from 7.30pm.

ROAD CLOSURES: 3pm to 5.45pm:

SATURDAY, MAY 15:

The cars will head out of Blacksmith Lane at 7:55am and make their way to Pumpkin Hill.

The 12.22km long stage starts south of Whenuakite and the Hot Water Beach intersection and ends just before the one-way bridge on the Whitianga side of Tairua.

For those who prefer a flat white with their early morning dose of race cars, there's always the option of grabbing an outside table in Tairua and taking in Targa's field in between mouthfuls.

The Whiritoa stage will again involve the closure SH25 from south of the township to Golden Valley Rd, and then on to Waihi. There are many good spectator access points just off Golden Valley Rd.

There will a quick service stop at Morgan Park in Waihi before the rally carries on through the Hauraki District.

ROAD CLOSURES: 7.15am to 10.30am:
Pumpkin Hill SH25 (Tairua Whitianga Rd and Main Rd), starting at House No. 1032 A/B (750 metres South of its intersection with Hot Water Beach Road) to finish at its intersection with Ocean Beach Road (just North of Tairua).
