Many cities around the world are moving to minimise their overall city carbon emissions. Vancouver has gone as far as aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050. What does this mean for Tauranga?

Can we justify controlling these emissions, given the costs and disruption to current progress? Can we afford not to, considering the predicted environmental threats, the need to respond responsibly and the benefits of moving to the clean technologies of the future?
'Sustainable Backyards provides the perfect opportunity to highlight important issues and ask the public for their input,” says coordinator Tania Bramley.
Envirohub Bay of Plenty has organised two key events during Sustainable Backyards to bring carbon emissions to the forefront.
The off-the-grid event powered by solar electricity – Envirofest – at Mount Maunganui on February 28 launches the 10th anniversary of Sustainable Backyards, with headline speakers from national organisations Generation Zero and 350.org. Two workshops on carbon options for Tauranga and divestment from fossil fuels will be held.
Following Envirofest, a film screening and panel discussion on carbon options for Tauranga will be held at the Wesley Centre on March 10 from 7pm.
Organised by local concerned citizens with support from Envirohub, the movie night will present Al Gore's presentation at the recent Davos World Economic Forum meeting outlining the science, the challenges, and the achievements.
This will be followed by two short clips on progress in other cities including Copenhagen, and some of the technologies involved. The panel discussion will include representatives from council, community, business and youth.
Public feedback from both events will form part of a submission to councils to address carbon control.

ReCycling

The person/s who changed the kerbside recycling needs to revisit and re introduce. We are what I call a landfill city. If you want to recycle you take to a transfer station. Cost effective no. Fuel wise no.

What a load of useless propaganda. CO2 is vital to life on earth - without it we and the plants that supply our oxygen wil die - and that is pretty final - the more CO2 is followed by greater growth of all trees and plants including increases in all food crops. All this crap about reduction of CO2 is being pushed by idiot people who know absolutely nothing about how our world and life works - and are cheeky enough to hold their hands out to be paid for their worthless information.
Global warming, climate change

As I see it, it is very simple: we have 2 choices. 1/ we listen to what 99% of authoritative climate change scientists are telling us about CO2 being a greenhouse gas and that humans are VERY likely to be causing CC and act accordingly in the interests of leaving a habitable planet to future generations and other life forms we share this planet with or 2/ we choose to believe it is all a giant hoax, accuse those scientists of scaremongering/ predicting doom and gloom and continue obliviously on our Business As Usual path and put at risk a habitable planet. I know which I choose. A no-brainer.
