'Leave the racing to the track so you can ensure you will be back” is Paeroa Police's message ahead of this weekend's Battle of the Streets motorcycle event.
Sergeant Phil Caldwell says planning is just as important as who wins, and that should include people giving themselves plenty of time to get to and from the race event.
'By now fans should be aware that they will encounter a liquor ban in the town during the event,” says Phil. 'This ban is one of our most effective tools in ensuring a safe family friendly event, one that brings a lot not only to Paeroa but the wider Waikato as well.”
A dispensation will exists for alcohol to be consumed within the confines of the race circuit on race day.
Phil says with the event usually attracting a crowd up to 15,000 people, police wants everyone to come away having had a positive experience of Paeroa and the region.
'The liquor ban basically covers the whole town everywhere within the 50km/h speed zone with the exception of the fenced off race circuit where the dispensation applies.”
The area where alcohol can be consumed will be well defined and police are working closely with race organisers and partners to ensure the day is a success.
The race circuit will be ringed by a six foot high fencing and the organisers have assured police there will be ample signage at all entrances into the venue.
'The main thing is for everyone to enjoy themselves,” says Phil. 'For those who impact on the enjoyment of others there will be a highly visible police presence at the venue to clamp down on any alcohol related disorder and anyone involved in this type of behaviour will be asked to leave.”
Police are reminding people to leave the racing on the track and not to attempt to emulate their favourite riders on the trip home.
'We want everyone to arrive home safe and well to ensure they'll be here to enjoy next year's event.”
