Police: Ride safe and be safe

Waikato Police are imploring motorcyclists to do everything they possibly can to 'ride safe and be safe” when out on the road.

This plea for riders to consider their safety follows the death of 34-year-old Wayde Anthony Thomas who was killed in a two motorcycle collision near Temple View in Hamilton last Friday.

Acting Waikato Road Policing Manager Inspector Dana McDonald says the Serious Crash Unit is investigating the incident without the benefit of witnesses, other than the two riders involved.

'Initial indications are that he suffered fatal injuries in a collision between two motorcycles.

'The rider of the second motorcycle suffered serious to critical injuries in the crash and is currently being treated in Waikato Hospital.”

Dana adds that is it is too early to say what, if any, part speed or alcohol may have played in the crash.

'But we can confirm neither rider was wearing a crash helmet or other safety gear when the crash occurred.”

Dana says of the four road fatalities on Waikato roads so far this year, three had involved people dying on the road while riding two or four-wheeled motorbikes.

He is imploring riders to do everything they can to ride safe and be safe on the road.

"The roads are a social environment requiring all road users to respect the risks.

'Police ask all road users to do what they can to keep themselves and others safe.”
