Whitianga Police are renewing their call for people heading down to the beach to make sure valuables are locked up in their cars or left at home.
This call comes after a person swimming at Cathedral Cove had items stolen from their bag last week on Friday, says Whitianga police sergeant Andrew Morrison.
'While most of the people sun bathing around your stuff can be trusted, unfortunately it only takes one thief to spoil your day.
'Leave valuables at home or lock them in your car out of sight, and let us know if you see anyone acting suspiciously around other people's property.”
Other thefts in the area over the past week include a yellow mountain bike stolen from a Hannan Rd address on January 10, plus produced stolen from a stall at a Hodge Rd address on January 11.
But Andrew says police are in possession of excellent security footage from the produce stall which is helping them to identify the culprit.
Last week also saw police arrest a 23-year-old local woman for a theft ex-shop offence on January 12, but Andrew is pleased that no motorists were apprehended for drunk driving.
'[There were] a couple of crashes last week, with a truck full of molasses rolling on State Highway 25 near Whenuakite being the standout.
'A car was also unlawfully converted [stolen] when an ex-partner failed to return a borrowed car as agreed and our enquiries are continuing to locate her.”
Police also attended three domestic incidents last week, which included a drunk man being removed from his ex-partner's Annette Pl property on January 10 as he was 'not welcome there”.
The following day, two sisters were arguing at a Cook Dr address, with alcohol a major factor, and both were given sound advice from police, says Andrew.
'[On the same day] a couple arguing over custody issues at a Grange Rd address were advised to read their agreement and stick to it.”
There were two incidents of damage, the first on January 8 where a car was damaged outside a Kenwood Dr address. The offender climbed onto the vehicle and dented the roof and bonnet.
While a group of youths banging on the windows of a Cordyline Cres address and running off on January 10 'need to grow up and start thinking about others.”
Andrew is also asking people who are still on holiday to show a little love to their neighbours this week.
'It's that time of year again when we need to remind a few people who are lucky enough to still be on holiday that most people are now back at work.
'So keeping noise levels reasonable and turning stereos off at a reasonable hour will go a long way to keeping the neighbours happy,” says Andrew.
