Police are looking into the cause of a fire in a derelict home in Waihi overnight, and have not ruled out arson.
Waihi Fire Brigade were called to the vacant house on Quarry Road at around 10.30pm to find the empty building engulfed in flames.
The cause of a derelict house fire is being investigated.
Northern Fire Communications shift manager Megan Ruru says the house was well-involved when firefighters arrived.
'It appears the house had been derelict for a number of years,” says Megan.
Hauraki sub area commander Senior Sergeant Rex Knight says police are investigating the fire.
'We weren't advised about the fire until this morning,” says Rex. 'Fire have requested we attend because it is a derelict home.
'At the moment it has not been deemed an arson and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.”
Rex says he is waiting for CIB members to attend the scene to determine if the fire is suspicious or not.
People who have information about the fire, or saw anything suspicious around the time the fire started, are asked to contact their nearest police station.
Alternatively, information can left anonymously via the Crimestoppers line on: 0800 555 111.
