Chemical spill closes Cameron Rd

UPDATE 2:05PM: Cameron Road will be closed to north-bound traffic for up to an hour between 15th Avenue and 17th Avenue after a hazardous chemical spill.

Emergency services have closed off an area near the intersection of Cameron Road and 16th Avenue while they deal with a small potassium cyanide spill.

Fire crews are in attendance at a chemical spill on Cameron Road.

Cordons are in place that may affect traffic in the area, and people travelling along Cameron Road are advised to change to Fraser Street.

Five fire engines and a hazmat (hazardous materials) truck are on site, while around four police cars are at the scene directing traffic.

NZ Fire Service area commander Murray Binning says: 'A man self-admitted himself to hospital after he was exposed to a vial of potassium cyanide, which is a highly toxic and extremely dangerous substance.

'He is currently being checked for contamination and another woman who was on the premises at the time is also being checked.

'The incident happened in a dental studio and the situation is now under control.”

We'll have more information as it becomes available.
