Police: slow down on our roads

Waikato police are warning motorist to 'expect little mercy” if they are caught speeding on the district's road.

This warning comes after police reviewed the speeds of motorists across the region who were caught and issued tickets for speeding.

District Road Policing manager Inspector Freda Grace says it looks like the the Boomtown Rats are not the only ones who don't like Mondays.

'On Monday afternoon one of our staff stopped a V8 Commodore at Whitikahu travelling at 178km/h.

'While around the same time the rider of a Harley Davidson motorcycle stopped on SH1 at Horsham Downs travelling at 162km/h.”

Freda says about the same time a car on the Waikato Expressway was stopped at 141km/h.

Things were not much better in the south of the district.

Four drivers travelling on SH3 were caught travelling at 129, 134, 137 and 138km/h.

A suspended driver was also caught driving at 148km/h.

Then on Tuesday afternoon police officers stopped two drivers travelling at more than 80km/h past rural schools, says Freda.

'Such behaviour cannot and will not be tolerated.

'The travelling public of the Waikato have a right to expect the roads to be a safe environment and incidents such as the ones outlined have no place on our roads.”

Freda says the public can expect to see more police out on the roads working to keep the public safe.

Safety around schools is already a district priority, as is drunk driving, and police have seen some significant success recently around small changes in tactics accounting for over twice the number of intoxicated drivers, she says.

'In terms of speed, the public can expect to encounter various overt and covert measures taken by Police to prevent road trauma.

'When you compare the physical, emotional and economic harm associated with road trauma a sting to the wallet is far less traumatic that the loss of a loved one.”
