A few last-minute trolleys whipped up in people's garages overnight bumped the number of entries for Tauranga Blue Light's Trolley Derby up to 23 at the weekend.
The event for Te Aranui Youth Trust, proudly sponsored by Tauranga Mitre 10 Mega and MORE FM, invited families to race home-made go-karts down Bethlehem's Westmorland Rise on Sunday.
A total 23 entries raced down Westmorland Drive in Bethlehem on Sunday.
Blue Light operations manager Wendy Nicholls says with the sun shining and everything running smoothly, the event was a great success.
She said: 'We had 23 entries in total with a good assortment of different trolleys, from home-made ones whipped up overnight from things around the garage, to very professional ones.”
Tauranga businesses were encouraged to enter a trolley in the corporate division, with wizzers, nippers and zoomers races for the children.
Wendy adds: 'We had a huge amount of help from the Mount, Bethlehem and Tauranga South community patrol groups, staff and students at Te Wharekura o Mauao, Mitre 10 Mega, More FM and, most importantly, Tauranga Police.
'Without their assistance it would not have run smoothly – and a big thanks to Mag & Tyre Centre.”
Blue Light is a community policing initiative set up to reduce youth crime and build positive police, youth and community partnerships within the Western Bay of Plenty.
