Police are especially keen to speak with several members of the public that stopped to help who have not already spoken to them.
Both the pregnant woman and the child were flown to Auckland hospitals by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
The child passenger is currently in a serious but stable condition at Auckland's Starship Children's Hospital after suffering head injuries.
The pregnant woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Auckland Hospital's emergency department as a precaution.
Waikato Serious Crash Unit senior constable Graham Fitzpatrick says investigators are working to build up an understanding on the cause of the crash.
Initial indications suggests the pregnant woman was driving on SH25 from Whitianga in a Nissan Bluebird and went to turn on to Mill Creek Rd at about 5.45pm, he says.
'An Isuzu Bighorn SUV travelling in the same direction has collided with the rear of the car.
'The impact of this collision appears to have shunted the car into the opposite lane resulting in a collision with an oncoming Holden Colorado utility.”
Graham says the drivers of both 4WD vehicles were shaken but uninjured in the crash.

Emergency services staff attending the crash acknowledged the several members of the public, including off-duty medical staff, who assisted the injured before they arrived.
He would like to hear from any of these good Samaritans who have not already been interviewed by police.
Due to heavy traffic flows police believe there may be many more people who witnessed the crash than they have so far spoken to.
For that reason investigators are asking those people to contact the Whitianga Police, says Graham.
'The challenge for us is many motorists in this area are visitors or maybe even overseas tourists and we need to speak to them before they leave for home or head out of the country.”
