The theme of the event may be gardening – but lead organiser of Te Puna Quarry Park's Spring Fling Athole Harvey says there's more to the event than just that.

The park's second annual Spring Fling is a greenfinger's dream for gardening enthusiasts to learn about all things horticultural – but Athole says there are also plenty of family activities and something for the blokes.
'It's a day for the young and old. The theme of the day is gardening, with gardening enthusiasts here to learn about pruning – but it's more than that.
'People can come and look around the park or have a picnic…it's a perfect Father's Day out.”
Looking around the park this morning, Athole estimates there are several hundred people enjoying the activities including gardening talks, children's sand crafts and a classic car display.
'We've even got two people talking about bees…honey bees and bumble bees.
'It's just fabulous and of course we've got the wonderful sun here with us today which just creates a lovely backdrop for everything that's happening here.”
About 23 stall holders are set up at the lower terrace of the park, including bulb experts, fuchsia lovers, a renowned plant breeder, a bearded iris growers, as well as a plum tree specialists, floral art and orchid repotting demonstrations.
There are also coffee stalls and the ever popular Devonshire tea and scones made by volunteer Shona Perves and her helpers.
'The queue for that is stretched out the door,” says Athole. 'There's a great atmosphere here and there's lots of families.”
A classic car display is also on show.
This is the second Spring Fling event hosted by the quarry park following a successful inaugural event in 2013.
'It's bigger than last year,” says Athole. 'The success of last year's event has made this one even bigger. Watch out next year we'll be having a bonanza.”
The event is at Te Puna Quarry Park until 4pm today. Entry is $2 per adult and children enter for free. All funds raised go to park projects.
