Pontoons out of action

Repairs on the length of Dive Crescent undercut by wind driven waves in last week's storm are underway.

A Tauranga City Council spokesperson says there is no estimate yet on the time or the cost of replacing the piles on the Edgewater Strand pontoons snapped off in the storm.

The pontoon at the Trinity Wharf also sank in the storm in spite of the recent addition of a new concrete pile intended to prevent such an occurrence.

Easterly winds early last Wednesday, June 11 peaked at 111kmh with sustained wind speeds over 80km/h for long periods, resulting in driving onshore waves along The Strand reclamation.

The weight of the pontoons was lifted by the wave action and repeatedly thrown back against the piles, some of which broke.
