Motorists are being warned of potholes on a stretch of State Highway 2, north of Te Puke, following this week's storm.
Contractors are expected to start resurfacing works, between Atuaroa Bridge and Te Puke Quarry Road on Sunday from 6.30pm, weather permitting.
Work to repair pothole will start tomorrow.
NZ Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty highway manager Brett Gliddon says traffic is being moved across the carriageway and will still flow in both directions while the temporary work is completed.
'A detour is in place near Atuaroa Bridge for local traffic access. The repair work is expected to be complete by Tuesday.
'Traffic speeds in the area had been lowered to 70kph to allow contractors to complete temporary repairs.”
The Transport Agency is investigating the exact cause of the deterioration which had been made worse by heavy rain.
A continued temporary speed limit of 70km/hr will be placed over this section of SH2 until a permanent solution is found.

This is by far the worst of a large number of road repair failures around the bay since early March. Time to start charging the offending contractors for redoing the job. This job had pot holes at twenty four hours after sealing the lime was seeping over the length of the job in the first week. The transport agency doesn't have to look far for a resin for failure if a contractor panics and seals a road in the rain it will fail.

This road is an absolute shocker and they cannot blame all the rain of the past week for the breakdown of it all into the present state. It started within days of them finishing it. One cannot help but get the feeling it was a cheap done job to last long enough for it to be passed onto the W/Bay council when the new by pass is completed. Hopefully the council will make sure that a well done job up to a high standard is now done before they sign off on it.
This warning should read:

"SH2: Pothole winner" (not warning) because that's exactly what that stretch of road is.. Pothole winner - hands down.

All the above is very true but I can't see any thing changing in the near future.
