Police car rammed in pursuit

Tauranga Police are disgusted with the driving of a 17-year-old after a police car was rammed and lead police on a chase around Mount Maunganui.

Police stopped a Toyota Altezza car on Marine Parade shortly after 11pm following reports the vehicle was speeding earlier in the evening.

A police car was rammed when a teenage driving fled a routine stop.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Saunders says the driver initially stopped but then reversed his car into a police car before driving off along Marine Parade.

Police chased the fleeing driver.

Glenn says the 17-year-old drove at speeds in excess of 150km/h causing police to abandon the pursuit.

'The driver was located several hours later.”

He is to appear in Tauranga District Court this morning charged with dangerous driving, reckless driving and driving with excess breath alcohol.

'This boy's driving was ridiculous. Driving at 150km/h in a 50km/h zone is nothing short of ridiculous.

'When are these young people going to learn? Here we have a 17-year-old disqualified driver driving at outrageous speeds with a passenger.

'Once again all the ingredients of a disaster were present. It absolutely unbelievable.”

Disqualified

Only 17 and already a disqualified driver. I think itsd about time they brought in a system like they have on motorbikes. Start of with a low powered car and as experience is gained graduate to something bigger but only after about two years driving experience

Lock him up and throw away the key.

Jail time

I would say crush this morons car, throw him in jail for a while so he has time to think long and hard what he has done. The usual slap on the wrist with a wet bus ticket don't work for these types. Nip it in the bud with short, sharp shock treatment for it to sink in.

Baby

in this case the parents should be held accountable. This kid obviously disregards the law and would very soon be behind the wheel again. Name and shame parents of these out-of-control babies.

The unfortunate thing is this guy will be able to reply apply and probably do again. Most of these idiots that do these things have rich mummies and daddies who do not care and will probably pay his fine and buy him another car. So I suggests disqualifying for life or at least he is 30

That would help............

but lower powered vehicles can still go fast if youv'e got an idiot behind the wheel like this one!..the "issues" with pieces of work such as this start much, much earlier before being introduced to driving...

I agree with all the comments. When will the punishment deter drivers like this. What sort of a driver will he be in 10 years?Ban him from driving for life.

disqualified drivers or those who take off from police, vehicle to be confiscated and sold to cover costs. At leasts 10 years no license,if you loan one of them your car tough. If car is stolen at least 2 years jail. Automatically blaming parents very naïve.

Remove the power.

The court should have the power to limit the CC rating of a convicted driver. Driving around in a little "shopping cart" is really uncool. The getaway is limited. This could be an endorsement on their liscense, if caught driving wrong CC rating car confiscated and disqualified again. No ifs or buts.

I know this boy very well, I know his mother and I know his background. I am not saying what he has done is right, but all of you need to think about the bigger picture. Jail would destroy him. He is not a "moron" and he does not have "rich mummies and daddies" so stop making stupid assumptions and look at the bigger picture. All of you need to think about this young man and actually understand that there is always two sides to every story. He is an amazing boy with heaps of potential. And he should be supported by his community and have people caring and wishing the best for him. Why would someone wish years of jail for a young boy who just needs support? Jail will do nothing but harm? Why be cruel? Why don't you try source the reason why and help him?
