Local Internet candidate confident

An aspiring Welcome Bay politician is preparing to entice and promote a stronger, younger generation through technology and social media, as he vies for a spot in the Internet Party.

Patrick Salmon is one of 20 candidates shortlisted to debate their way forward into the finalised 10 candidates of the Kim Dotcom-led political party.

The 27-year-old is ecstatic to have fended off 120 other Internet Party members during a series of preliminary selection meetings in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin last week.

Patricks says what clicked his interest in the party is its views on making politics and voting more understandable to younger generations, who may otherwise have no interest in politics.

He believes by simplifying the 'difficult language barriers” of politics this will entice younger people to vote again with the help of social media and the internet.

'People going out with forms and getting people to enrol and vote still happens, but people are still falling through the cracks. By utilising the medium that our generation use [social media] is a great move and makes it easier,” says Patrick.

With a background in both iwi, politics and community and social services the father of three admits to harbouring ambitions of being in parliament –where he could 'contribute to society” regardless of one's background.

'My background is in a low decile whanau, with the gangs and I just chose a different path and I just want to inspire my family that you can do whatever you want and be whatever you want.

'The Internet party itself has gone against historical odds by allowing youth to have a voice in parliament, which I'm really excited about.”

Attention now turns to the final national selection event in Auckland on Saturday with Patrick identifying jobs and innovation as key points of his debate.

'I think becoming a digital country due to the lack of space and utilising our natural resources is a better option.

'Going into technology would be our best chance not just for survival but to be a much stronger contributor globally.”

The Internet Party recently formed a partnership with the Mana Party through a memorandum of understanding that will see the two parties combine a list of candidates to contest the party vote in this September's general election.

While both parties have separate identities, a new political party called Internet MANA will be formed.

Internet Mana will submit a combined list to contest the party vote, with candidates drawn from the Internet Party and Mana as component parties. The combined list will be finalised following the conclusion of the Internet Party's candidate selection process.

Mana will have first, third and fourth positions on the list, with the Internet Party taking second, fifth and sixth spots.

This was sounding like a different and interesting new move in politics, right up until the point they merged with the Mana party. Now they are just a social media backed, race based party. Shame.

This Mana Party and Internet Party marriage is a sham, unfortunately it will capture the interest of the very young voters. Those who think Dotcom is a hero because he is a Gamer. Strewth.

anyone can align themselves with such a being is totally beyond my comprehension. Just look at the trail he leaves, much of which is utterly unpalatable. God help NZ, this guy won't.

Everyday I am reminded of the shabby treatment our Winston received at the hands of a vociferous few led by blowhard Clarkson and his mob - as time passes, I hear many Tauranga voters ruing the day they abdicated from Winston's leadership. This new lot fully deserve the 'LOL' comment, but, I believe ultimately they will be doing us all a service by focusing voters minds on the reality of NZ politics where I believe all would accept that Winston is essential to keep the others under, at least some sort of control.

No more a sham than National jumping into bed with whomever just to get in. ACT, John Banks, Moari, Peter Dunne. The whole shebang is a joke and Collins / Williamson / Banks to name just a recent few show that the established parties are all up to no good lining their own and their friends pockets. If any of you think by voting Labour or National you are not suckers then the joke is on you.

Laila Harre leads the Internet Party NOT Kim dotCom. People young and old will be attracted to it for reasons beyond Gaming. Patrick Salmon looks to be a great candidate that could well lift the moron quotient of Tauranga voters afer two terms of Simon Bridges and one of Bob Clakeson (another dodgy Act wannabe) I invite ignorance such as 'Fail' and 'Overit' to investigate beyond the 6pm News. If this young man is selected ... go and hear him speak ... you can only become more in formed than you presently are.
