Two political hopefuls for the Bay of Plenty National Party candidacy face the second of three pre-selection meetings today.
Tauranga City Councillor Steve Morris and Fonterra group director Co-operative affairs Todd Muller will face 101 voting delegates at a meeting at Maungatapu, before the final selection vote next Tuesday.
Todd Muller and Steve Morris and are both in the running for the National Bay of Plenty seat.
The incumbent, Health Minister Tony Ryall, announced in February his plan to retire from politics at the general election in November. Tony's held the seat since 1996.
Both are deemed strong contenders, having lived in the electorate for many years. Steve is out-going Health Minister Tony Ryall's former campaign manager. Todd also grew up in the Bay of Plenty and worked the family's kiwifruit orchard before being employed at Zespri, Apata Coolstores and Fonterra.
David Farrar at Kiwiblog says Todd's National Party membership includes being a friend a confidant of then Prime Minister Jim Bolger in the 1990s.
Many people who expressed interest in the standing for the safe National seat earlier on didn't follow through, says electorate chairman Mark Bayly.
'Early on Todd Muller and Steve Morris announced they were going to run.
'They're both high profile. Whether that played on the other people who were showing an interest, whether that played on their minds I'm not too sure,” says Mark.
'They (Steve and Todd) certainly did come out early - it's quite pleasing, probably quite a strong contest. I wouldn't be able to pick it at this stage, it would be inappropriate anyway.”
The final selection meeting starts at 7pm Tuesday June 3, with the final voting round not expected to begin till about 9pm.

accountability

In my book if Morris gets the nod he should made accountable for the many thousands it will cost the City for a bi-election. We just had a similar situation with Crossman in WBOP council.
Do your homework

Grasser - you need to do your homework before you go throwing comments out there. He has already stated publicly he will dig into his own pockets and cover those costs.
Better option

Whilst a by-election and the associated cost would be unfortunate for a council counting pennies I believe the community would be better served with Steve as the MP.
Accountability Indeed

Grasser: Steve Morris has already been quoted as saying he'll extend his mortgage to help cover the cost of a by-election. I've never met Mr Muller but in all my dealings with Steve Morris, I have found him to be a hard working, honest(!) politician who sincerely cares about those he represents as a councillor with a true heart for helping people. I've no doubt Mr Muller is a strong candidate, but if I got to make the decision, it'd be a no brainer.

yep a no brainer alright!!!, Todd Muller is the one, Mr Morris only came out with the statement about funding the by election after the issue was raised, and while still a City Council member is actively seeking another job, surely that is a breach of any employment contract, but hold on..... this is the T.C.C we are talking about, and they do whatever they wish, and before all Mr Morris and his supporters start with their vitriol, I believe the community is better served with Todd as their M.P.

Steve Morris would be best to keep his focus on Tauranga City - perhaps take his political ambitions on to the mayoralty.....? Todd Muller has strong family and business ties locally, a solid history of service and connection with the National Party and is of the calibre to be a worthy successor to Tony Ryall. Both great applicants but Todd's maturity and connections make him the better of the two.
My 2 cents worth

Steve is well known in the community and he is passionate about what he does. I'd be choosing him if I had a choice.
Shifting

It's not the cost of the by election that's an issue, it is the sudden shift in commitment that worries me. What if another hot job comes along a few months later? Will he change again what he wants? He did tell the Tauranga voters he would work for them, when he wanted to be elected...

The Big Picture

Hopefully most people can see through the issue of a by election that keeps raising its head, to see that Steve Morris is committed to this region whether at local or government level. From a personal perspective he has worked with myself in a thoroughly passionate, professional and knowledgeable manor on various local issues. This commitment is just what this region needs to enable a positive move towards a better working relationship between local and central government which is sorely needed. Steve Morris is the link to this happening.
