Kmart opens til midnight

Bayfair's Kmart is extending its opening hours to midnight every evening to recognise the changing face of retail and those with non-traditional working weeks.

From the start of this month, the Bayfair store joins six other Kmart locations around the country offering midnight trading.

Kmart Bayfair store manager Forrest Worthen says the Girven Rd store has found many of its customers are shift workers or come from families with two parents working.

'We listen to our customers day-in and day-out and continually adapt to the ways they shop,” says Forrest.

Combined with savvy shoppers keen to avoid the weekend peak times or simply wanting to duck in while one partner tucks the children in bed, early customer feedback indicates the ‘after-hours' retail trade will be extremely well-received, says Forrest.

'We have found that our customers are busier and many are juggling multiple commitments between work, kids and healthy social lives to boot,” says Forrest.

'As we started to open some stores later across the country we noticed increases in traffic in the 6pm to midnight period, which has led to the roll out within Bayfair.”

Excuses for extending hours. Why not open 24/7 like they do in the Good old US of A? or is that coming due to corporate/shareholder pressure? Isnt this the last store in NZ to extend hours to midnight???? Does staff safety come into the equation or is it all about burning candles throughout the night for a vvv small minority to shop for cheap (lasts 2 months) goods to boost corporation profits? Choice? dont make me laugh, its about Aussie firms abusing eco-social groups.

1. People can job share....they will not be working the full 12 hours....2 people doing 6 hour shifts, double the people working @ Lis1111....I like to see what I am buying, buying off a website is not necessarily the answer to everyones needs.

Ridiculous

I feel sorry for the people who have to work there. I guess they will get extra money for working late.... Yeah Right!!

The thin end of the wedge

With this change the landlords may ask the rest of the retailers to extend their own opening hours as well. The small retailer just cannot afford this and will drive them out. Seems like a small change, but it has larger implications.

Woohoo...

Open til midnight and you still (as a customer) get told you have to use those damn self-checkouts. So yeah they might now employ "twice as many people" to share the 12 hour shifts, but in effect won't they just be re-hiring all the empty positions they created when they put in those self-checkouts?? They are ridiculous, I certainly don't buy as much from there anymore, and it will be interesting to see how they get on at Christmas!!!

Why not!!

If there is a demand "why not". For you`s who still live in the 20th century..catch-up!! This is where the modern world is..ie both parents working. Also where Mum can not work due to small children she may enjoy the opportunity to earn a few extra $`s to supplement the family income plus some older students may also enjoy the chance to supplement their student allowance. If it doesn't affect you personally leave others with the freedom to choose their own lifestyles!!

Overit

KMart has installed self service machines so probably not a lot of staff is needed. I don't see enough night time trade to see this being permanent.

Feeling annoyed

I understand that the world is changing we are becoming more busier but I don't think that opening a store till midnight is the answer life has become not so much if a life these days we all work ridiculous hours for next to nothing week to week do u really think people want to work to midnight and loose their social life too . what happened to working to live not living to work I feel sorry for future generations at this rate they might get a few hours sleep between shifts I think it's ridiculous!!!! I would love to see the people who made this decision work until midnight themselves
