A meeting is being held on Thursday evening at 7.30pm in the Bongard centre at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Cameron Rd, about the problem of sea lettuce.
A recent study of the plant funded by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic suggests the cause of the proliferation of sea lettuce is land based and not simply a natural phenomenon.
This sea lettuce infestation was spotted at Welcome Bay last week.
Author of the study, Julien Huteau of BOP Polytechnic says he has seen a link between the locations of the biggest infestations and activities being carried out nearby.
Tauranga Harbourwatch president Noel Peterson says there will be a representative from EBOP at the meeting.
'We want to hear as many views as possible about how to control the plant. It is responsible for killing bivalves, crustaceans and gastropods. It just covers them like a sheet of plastic.”
