Oropi Pools reopens to public

Oropi Hot Pools and Country Café fans are able to swim at the facility this weekend after the pools were closed for business for nearly one year due to hot water bore problems.

Ewen Cameron Drilling contractors has been working at the pools since June 2013 trying to find hot water after the hot water bore, put down about 13 years ago, collapsed.

Robyn Cooper is ready to get rid of the closed sign.

'It was just the metal that they used at the time; it was so thin and the mineral content of it just ate away at that galvanised pipe. It was just eaten up to a pulp,” says Oropi Hot Pools owner Robyn Cooper.

Robyn says replacing the old bore has taken almost 12 months due to contractors hitting granite, about 100 metres short of reaching hot water.

'When they went to put down the new bore, right beside the old one, they hit granite that they couldn't penetrate without breaking their drilling equipment. That was at about 300 metres.

'We tried three holes and we got it on the third hole, just before Christmas.”

According to Robyn, the job would have taken four-five weeks, but contractors had another job; and due to hitting the granite, they had to stop work and return when they could.

'They were very supportive all the way through and they just stuck with it,” says Robyn. 'They just kept on trying and they never gave up.”

At the time, a sign at the pool's locked gate saying: 'Sorry we are closed due to a pump failure”, a phone message explaining the same, unanswered emails and an inactive Facebook page stopped swimmers from visiting the pools.

Robyn apologises for not keeping the public up-to-date, but says she was unsure if she could reopen again.

'I didn't know what I was going to do. It's been a real journey for me…and people have been really supportive. I'm so looking forward to it that I'm nervous.”

Robyn had the pools blessed yesterday, before officially opening the facility to the public today.

The pools will be closed on Monday, before opening for business on Tuesday, April 15. New business hours are Tuesday-Sunday from 10am-10pm.

Although the pools are closed on Mondays, Robyn will open the facility on any Monday which falls on a public holiday. Prices will remain the same.
