On Thursday night one of Tauranga's more enigmatic bands takes the stage at No.1.
| The Mellow Drops will play unplugged on Thursday. |
The Mellow Drops (NZ) is a band led by two Irishmen who came to New Zealand a year or so ago to further their musical careers.
Cian O'Cinnseala and Derek Toner had been part of an Irish band called Mellowdrops, so when they decided to get another band going in New Zealand they negotiated with their mates back in Ireland to use a similar but different name. They added Tauranga's Paul Bloxham on bass and Ray Ward on drums and The Mellow Drops began gigging.
Their music has been described as something akin to Pink Floyd, Portishead and Coldplay, but you can hear for yourself when they play unplugged from 7.30pm. A $5 cover charge applies.
On Sunday, Bonjour Swing, the Tauranga's French café style swing duo are playing from 1.30pm. Robbie Laven and Marion Arts are Bonjour Swing and are both well known musicians with a long track record behind them. Expect to hear sounds like those of the Hot Club of Paris when they cover songs from the likes of Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt along with their own interpretations of other standards and a selection of their own original compositions. On Sunday Bonjour Swing will be joined by their son Oscar Arts on saxophone and clarinet.
