Warning as daylight saving ends

Bay of Plenty police are advising hikers planning to walk the Tongariro Crossing this weekend to bear in mind daylight saving is just around the corner.

Police have coordinated 14 search and rescue operations to the popular tourist attraction in the last few weeks.

Taupo's Greenlea rescue helicopter airlifts a hiker off the Tongariro Crossing.

They fear this number could escalate if visitors aren't mindful of additional risks that come with shorter days.

Senior Constable Barry Shepherd says some rescues were a result of hikers who had underestimated the alpine crossing.

'It is important that people are realistic about the challenge and the time needed to complete it, as this will only become more exaggerated as the days get shorter,” he says.

'That means being prepared.”

Police say anyone planning to do the hike should ensure they are organised with suitable clothing and equipment for changeable weather conditions.

Having a torch to avoid being caught out by darkness during the final stages of the track is also important.

Barry says Tongariro hikers are generally well prepared.

'Equipment and clothing have not been an issue during recent rescues; it has been good to see hikers being well prepared in that respect.”

We as humans have to be downright stupid if we have to be warned about daylight saving ending, let alone the ones who are tramping!!!!, why do we all not have micro chips inserted in our heads to alleviate any thinking, or common sense.

Totally agree....
