So far more than $24,000 has been raised as people step up and take an icy plunge for the 2014 Heart Stoppers Challenge.

People have gathered at Coronation Park today, some prepared for their ice bath and others in support of the 10th annual challenge.

Bop @ Heart chairperson Rachael Parkes says with every heard stopper challenge around the country, 60 per cent of the money raised go towards the branch which organised the event and 40 per cent goes to the national office.

'We support more than 120 families with babies, children, teens and adults suffering from heart conditions.

'We run murmurs groups for babies and toddlers so their families get the time to meet other families who have already been through what they are going through.”

She says the teams competing today are a real mixture of people who know someone who suffers from a heart condition and businesses which are always getting on board and supporting the cause.

'The fundraising event was a chance for people to experience a bit of what children with heart conditions go through.

"The chest is filled up with an icy slush. It's things they went through when they had open heart surgery.”
