Man pulled from lake dies

The man pulled from Lake Taupo in an unconscious state yesterday has died.

Sidhant Sharma, a 21-year-old Indian national studying in New Zealand, was on a privately-owned boat with three other people when he got into trouble while swimming in the lake yesterday afternoon.

The death of a man pulled from Lake Taupo has been referred to the Coroner.

Police says the man went for a swim about 2.30pm and failed to resurface.

'He was pulled from the water and the boat made a mayday call while an overseas tourist, who saw they needed assistance, swam to the boat and performed CPR,” says a statement from police.

'The boat then motored to shore to meet the ambulance.”

Sidhant was transferred to Waikato Hospital last night in serious condition and died this morning.

The matter has been referred to the Coroner.
