Swansong for Hazmobile

The HazMobile, a free collection service for household hazardous waste, is about to make what is likely to be its last visit to the Western Bay of Plenty.
The farewell visit to collect old and often dangerous chemicals, poisons and cleaning products begins at Katikati on Saturday, February 27.

The Katikati collection is at Hume Pack-N-Cool, 4 Prospect Drive, from 10am to 2pm.
The collection service will then move to the Maleme Street Transfer Station, Greerton on March 13 from 9am till 2pm.
Saturday, March 20 from 10am to 2pm the Hazmobile service will collect from Te Puke's Commerce Lane car park.
Later in the month it moves further east, appearing in Opotiki on Tuesday, March 23 at 10am to 2pm at the Resource Recovery Facility, Wellington Street.
On March 27 it is Whakatane, 10am to 2pm Bunnings Warehouse car park, The Hub.
Saturday, April 10 from 10am to 2pm Kawerau Transfer Station, Dump Road (off River Road).
HazMobile will accept and dispose of almost all household hazardous waste but does not accept paint, asbestos, ammunition or other explosives – nor medical waste such as syringes or pharmaceuticals, or e-waste or waste from commercial operators.
'When mixed, some hazardous products can react with each other and may cause a fire or toxic fumes. Leaky containers can contaminate the soil or groundwater, and ultimately streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean. Hazardous waste that ends up in a landfill can pollute the environment,” says Environment BOP HazMobile coordinator Paul Futter.
From July 2009, all major providers of agrichemicals began collecting and disposing of unwanted chemicals as part of the Agrecovery Chemicals product stewardship scheme.
