Forestry company fined $80k

One of New Zealand's largest forestry companies has been fined $80,000 in the Tauranga District Court.
PF Olsen Limited was prosecuted and later fined for two offences under the Resource Management Act.
This is the largest fine handed out for any prosecution by Environment BOP.

Both charges relate to the same event, which was the collapse of several piles of logging debris in the Waiotahe Forest near Opotiki, following heavy rain in April 2008.
During sentencing, Judge Jeff Smith described the incident as a very serious matter.
According to Environment BOP staff, at sentencing the Judge said, 'I have come to the clear conclusion that there was wilful failure by PF Olsen Limited to heed numerous warnings from the regional council about the instability of the logging debris. I am not prepared to accept it was bad luck."
