Summer s over, rubbish bins gone

Mount Maunganui residents are annoyed that although the seasonal rubbish bins on Mauao and Leisure Island have gone, people are still dumping trash in those places.
'My concerns are that although the bin is temporary (for summer), lots of locals use the site all year round for walking – as do many fishermen/women and tourists visiting off season,” says resident Mark Clayson.

'I have witnessed cruise ship passengers, tourists, looking at the pile of rubbish in disbelief.
'A local surfer this morning commented on the lack of a bin and the disgusting mess accumulating.
'I pick up waste on a daily basis from Leisure Island so it is not just a seasonal problem. I understand that bins were removed from around the Mount base track, but Leisure Island attracts a different social group and is a convenient place to fish off.”
A solution is to reinstall the bin and empty it less frequently, says Mark.
'Even now there are grandstands on the main beach for surf competitions, so the Mount is still very busy and cruise ships are still entering the port.”

There's a 44 gallon drum on Leisure Island from Labour Weekend to mid February every year, says communications advisor Marcel Currin.
'If you go to any natural area you are not supposed to leave your rubbish behind,” says Marcel.
'There's a certain amount of responsibility that people have to assume as part of living in the community.”
There are no rubbish bins on the beaches, but there are rubbish bins off the beaches. It is the same thing, says Marcel.
The contractor states they cleaned the site twice and it was different rubbish each time. The Leisure Island site is one of 40 temporary bin sites Tauranga City Council uses to deal with the extra volumes of litter during the summer period.
There will not be a permanent bin on Leisure Island, but the walkway will continue to be checked for loose litter every week.
The rats that Mark saw on the track near the bin site will be dealt with by the parks team. Council staff say the rat population will only be encouraged if there is a bin on Leisure Island that is cleared twice a week – it will be a source of food for the rats.
