Stabbing accused released on bail

UPDATED 1.16PM: A 25-year-old woman accused of stabbing a man in a domestic related incident has been released on bail.

Awhina Patuwai appeared in Whakatane District Court this morning charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.


Police tap at the driveway of a home where a man was stabbed in Whakatane.

She was arrested yesterday and appeared in court where Judge Louis Bidois remanded in her custody until today.

Patuwai is accused of stabbing a 27-year-old man in the chest during an incident at a Hotene Street address yesterday.

The 27-year-old man suffered stab wounds to his chest and underwent emergency surgery in Waikato Hospital.

He is in a critical but stable condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.

Police believe the stabbing was a domestic related incident.

The woman accused of the stabbing was arrested and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm yesterday morning.

The accused is also facing unrelated charges of shoplifting and breaches of bail.

Patuwai is due back in court on January 30.
