Pedalling with a purpose

Cycling from Queenstown to Mount Maunganui is Alana Martin's plan to raise money for charity. But there is a catch – she is completing the South to North Island trip in 21 days.

Alana began the 1,436km trip on November 1 and will arrive at Mount Maunganui's Imbibe Bar today at 5pm.

The 29-year-old former Tauranga woman is completing the leg-burning challenge in an effort to raise money for Breath4CF – an organisation supporting people with cystic fibrosis.

Imbibe manager Jonathan Batley used to work with Alana and came on board to help his friend raise money for the charity.

'She has raised about $3400 and I would really like to help her get to $5000.”

He says, before she left, Alana set herself a goal of cycling about 90km each day.

'And she's stopping in every pub along the way for a beer and a whiskey. She's incredible.”

Alana was inspired to do the challenge by her friend Kristie Purton who has cystic fibrosis. Kristie joined Alana in Taupo today with the pair finishing the final leg to the Mount together.

An auction night at Imbibe will be held when the pair arrives to help Alana raise even more funds for the charity. The auction includes beauty vouchers, Queenstown adventures and a bike from Bike Barn on Hewletts Road.

Jonathan says Bike Barn helped him purchase the bike and has offered to donate some of the money to Breath4CF.
