Earlier this morning stingray were on the breakfast special on the menu in Tauranga Harbour this morning, for a small pod of orca.

Sun Media director Brian Rogers says they appear to be hunting stingrays and heading north towards Omokoroa.

Some Orca feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as sea lions, seals, walruses and even large whales.

'If they stay on this course, people standing out near the harbour will get a good display.”

Brian says Orca are regularly spotted in the east coast's harbours at some times of the year.

"About half a dozen orca, including what appears to be a calf, are dining out on the stingray delicacy as they hunt the shallows off Te Puna.

The pod are entertaining Labour weekend boaties and bystanders on the beach as they move up the harbour towards Omokoroa on the rising tide."

Orca are often known as killer whales and are toothed whales belonging to the oceanic dolphin family.

Killer whales are found in all oceans, from the frigid Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas.
