Couple head to fiery NSW

A Mount Maunganui couple are en-route to the fire-ravaged state of New South Wales as they look to meet up with family caught up in the blaze.

The Australian state is into its sixth day of bush fire emergency, with 2000 firefighters battling to save properties in the extensive area where 62 fires are burning, 13 of which are uncontained.

Extra firefighters are being brought in from Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania to relieve exhausted crews battling the fires that now stretch along a 300km front.

Australian media reports a total of 120,000 hectares is burning with more than 1000 firefighters working through the night to help contain the numerous fires.

For Peter and Carol Martelletti from Tauranga the flames that have continued to spread, fuelled by westerly winds, has meant the couple have been forced to re-work plans for their week-long visit to the state.

The couple were set to visit Carol's cousin in Winmalee, 80km west of Sydney in the area of the City of Blue Mountains affected by the bushfires.

They booked the trip four months ago, but plans have quickly been changed with Peter battling to find alternative accommodation in Sydney as it quickly fills up.

The Martellettis are set to arrive in Sydney this evening and will be keeping a close eye on the fires as they have concerns for their family who are on high alert as worsening conditions are forecast.

'As of last night she [Carol's cousin] was on yellow alert meaning she has five minutes to get out. She said a couple of houses across the road got totalled but she's been lucky so far,” says Peter.

'But we may if we get the opportunity possibly go up there for the day but that will be dependent on the weather.”

A total of 81 properties are confirmed to have been destroyed and 37 damaged by blazes in the Blue Mountains.

Tauranga Fire Brigade senior station officer Kevin Cowper says the fires are severe.

'They are terrible and for so early in the season as well. They have had a dry spell and it's pretty horrendous,” says Kevin.

Kevin says any efforts to send local firefighters to help in the NSW fires will be provided by rural fire authorities, and does not typically involve the urban crews.

As conditions worsen with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s there is concern three fires could join to create what has been described as a "mega fire” to the west of Sydney.

A total fire ban is in place for the Central Ranges, Illawarra and Shoalhaven, Greater Sydney Region and Greater Hunter districts.

SunLive is waiting to hear if rural firefighters from Tauranga will be providing aid.

I think its actually closer to 200 plus homes totally destroyed and the same again damaged badly why on earth would people go and get in the way. Families that have lost their homes and everything else need accommodation not tourists
