Rabbits in reserves, your thoughts

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is attempting to reduce the number of 'grazing” rabbits in public reserves by running a two month culling process in Omokoroa and Katikati.

The $2000 programme, which will run until the end of November, involves a number of bait stations full of non-poisonous cereal pellets. Then after a number of weeks a poisonous version of pellets is introduced.

Signs warning of the culling are being put up around the two areas warning residents and dog owners with information on the procedure, and what to do if a dog eats the bait – which there is an antidote for.

Read more about the process here.

SunLive asked members of the public if they thought there was a rabbit problem in the region and what they thought was the best method of controlling the bunny population.

Shoot rather than poison

why not shoot thm. then you wont have poison around that dogs, cats and children can get to. also you wont have dead rabbits lying around as those who shoot them will pick them up and dispose.. Shooting them is more humane than poisoning the rabbits. come on , this is common sense. I don't mean any one shoot them, a professional hunter will be available I am sure

What ever happened to the old rabbit board,we had no trouble with rabbits while they were going,I suppose it would be too expensive now so we will be plagued with rabbits again.
