A strong earthquake is reported to have struck near the Kermadec Islands, 900km from Tauranga.
GeoNet is reporting a magnitude 5.8 quake just before 7pm.
The quake is reported to have hit at a depth of 233km.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning centre has not issued a warning for New Zealand.
