Double David for Labour

David Parker will join David Cunliffe in leading the Labour Party after he was confirmed as the deputy leader today.

Party leader David Cunliffe says he and his newly elected deputy will make Labour an unstoppable Opposition and a government in waiting.

David Parker has been named the deputy Labour leader by newly elected leader David Cunliffe today.

'David Parker will make an outstanding deputy. He is a man of intellect and integrity, with the Labour values of opportunity and fairness at his core. I could not be happier with his elevation.

'We will work tirelessly together to earn the right for Labour to lead the next government.

David Parker will remain Labour's finance spokesperson and Shane Jones and Grant Robertson will take on roles in economic development and employment.

Grant will also take over as Leader of the House, replacing MP Trevor Mallard.

'Grant is a star performer in the house, and will do a great job coordinating Labour's battle to hold the National government to account in Parliament. I want to personally acknowledge the contribution he has made as deputy leader and the importance of his on-going role in helping guide our team.”

Sue Moroney taking on the role of Senior Whip and Iain Lees-Galloway will be the new Junior Whip.

'The whips play a key job managing the day-to-day running of caucus, and I have every confidence that Sue and Iain will run a tight ship.

'I want to thank Chris Hipkins and Darien Fenton for their enormous contribution as the whips team.

'The announcement of full caucus reshuffle will come in the next week, after I've held one-on-one discussions with each Labour MP. But it was important to get our senior leadership roles confirmed as soon as possible so that we can continue to take the fight to National.

'John Key and National are on notice – Labour is renewed, united and ready to go,” says David Cunliffe.
