Rain forecast for Tauranga

Wet and windy conditions are in the forecast for Tauranga this weekend as another sub-tropical low moves over the North Island.

A sub-tropical low at the beginning of the week was expected to bring wind and rain to the region but sunny conditions prevailed.

The MetService is predicting rain for this weekend.

The MetService says the second low is expected to move across the seas area to the east of the North Island during Saturday and Sunday.

'While there is still quite a lot of uncertainty about the exact path this low will take, it seems likely the highest rainfalls will be in the east, from Northland to Bay of Plenty and from Gisborne to Wairarapa,” says media and communications meteorologist Dan Corbett.

'The strongest winds are likely to be over the northern half of the North Island.”

Dan says location, timing and extent of the rain and strong winds are critically dependent on the path take by the sub-tropical low.

'A small change in the forecast path of the low could very likely result in a large change in the forecast weather.

'Give this, it will be particularly important for those in the North to keep up-to-date with MetService forecasts during the next few days.”

He says in contrast to the North Island, the South Island is expected to have a more settled weekend.

'Saturday should be reasonably fine, with little wind, in most South Island places. On Sunday, there is likely to be a bit of rain around.”
