Wanted: Mamaku memories

Stories from the Kaimai Ranges are being called for by the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, which is creating a formal historic record of the Mamaku Forest Park there.
The society is seeking your photographs, stories, artefacts, official records, letters and diaries of Mamaku Forest Park.

The Kaimai Mamaku Forest Park has been the centre of many people's lives in the Bay of Plenty and now Forest & Bird will record the memories.

'We want to bring together people's stories of Kaimai Mamaku so we can build a wider knowledge of the many aspects of the area's history, and share those stories with the community,” says Forest & Bird central North Island field officer Al Fleming.
He says people who recall stories told by their parents, grandparents or even great grandparents, of earlier times at Mamaku will be a valuable addition to the area's history.
The society also wants to hear of myths or oral histories about the forest dating to pre-European settlement days.
Contact Al Fleming at the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand, phone 07 575 8478, 021 988 295 or [email protected] or send information to him at: 558 Maunganui Rd, Mount Maunganui 3116.
