He was the first kiwi to reach the South Pole unsupported, he broke records in the Trans-Atlantic Rowing Race and next month, Tauranga's Jamie Fitzgerald takes the floor to inspire young future leaders.
Former Tauranga Boys' College and University of Waikato student Jamie Fitzgerald at the South Pole.
Next month he speaks to Bay of Plenty and Waikato Year 12 school students about planning, goals and leadership roles.
The former Tauranga Boys' College student spoke to 130,000 aspiring young leaders in 2004 and 2007 about their futures.
This year's half-day leadership sessions are a condensed version of seminars run by the company Jamie works for, ON-Brand Partners.
'There is no silver bullet to great leadership or special trick to achieving top results every time. It isn't just bloody-mindedness, either. Success is the result of stretching ourselves,” says Jamie.
'It involves thinking options through analytically, backing our judgment, adapting proven processes and believing in our ability,” Jamie says.
Students will be given a workbook to use during the Reaching Peak Performance: The Edge of Stretch sessions.
'When I went to the South Pole I had previously achieved a few things but that was a huge step up. Without disciplined planning I never would have achieved it. And that comes back to what the sessions with these students will be about,” says Jamie.
University of Waikato Vice-Chancellor Professor Roy Crawford describes Jamie as the embodiment of a young leader.
'He is one of this university's areas of distinctiveness. We're glad to be able to help the future leaders of New Zealand with their goals through this partnership with Jamie,” says Roy.
Jamie will visit Mount Maunganui College on August 6, Otumoetai College on August 18, Tauranga Girls' College on August 19 and Tauranga Boys' College on August 21.
