Waste costs drop at Bayfair

Waste costs are down 44 per cent at Bayfair shopping centre at Mount Maunganui.

The centre reports the drop since management began reforming its sustainable policy six years ago.
Bayfair operations manager Steve Ellingford says a sustainability strategy is more pertinent now than ever, as businesses grapple with the imminent introduction of a new waste disposal levy.
The new levy was implemented on July 1 and will incur an extra $10 plus GST per tonne of waste going to landfills.
Steve says this cost is likely to be directly passed on to businesses.
'Many business owners incorrectly assume improving sustainability will be a cost to the business. Establishing sustainable practices or elements in a business can lead to real, measurable cost savings over time,” says Steve.
'A switch to energy-efficient lighting, for instance, can have an immediate effect on overheads,” says Steve.
