Tauranga Enviroschool funds in question

All but one programme in the Western Bay of Plenty's Enviroschools are safe from budget cuts announced this week by the Ministry of Education.

Whakamarama School is one the Western Bay's 37 Enviroschools, which are thought to be safe from Ministry of Education funding cuts.

Thirty seven of New Zealand's 700 Enviroschools are in the Tauranga region.
Environment Bay of Plenty's education team leader Kerry Gosling says the Enviroschools He Kete Taiao programme may be axed, due to funding cuts.
'If we are affected by the budget cuts, the He Kete Taiao is the first programme that comes to mind,” says Kerry.
The He Kete Taiao programme runs in some of the region's full-immersion Maori language schools (kura), exploring environmental sustainability from a Maori perspective.
The Ministry of Education announced this week it will not continue funding the Enviroschools Foundation after 2010. Enviroschools in Tauranga are funded predominantly by EBOP with additional funds from Tauranga City Council.
The Enviroschools Foundation received $4.6m in the Labour Government's 2006 budget over four years. The Ministry of Education is in negotiations with the foundation to secure funding until the end of the year.
