Rotorua lakes safe again

An algal bloom health warning has now been lifted for Lake Rotorua, Ohau Channel, Okere Arm and the Kaituna River.

The algal bloom health warning was originally issued on April 20 and the situation has been monitored weekly ever since.
Algal bloom has now fallen back to safe levels.
Medical Officer of Health Dr Phil Shoemack says algal blooms can occur rapidly in the right conditions, and that it is always safest to check the water before getting in.
'Look before you leap. If the water looks discoloured, smells unusual, or if there is scum on the surface of lakes or on the beds of rivers, swim or play somewhere else,” says Phil.
Routine monitoring will continue and good up-to-date information on recreational water quality is available on the Environment Bay of Plenty website. www.envbop.govt.nz/water/water.asp
