Bay strategies outlined

The aim to get the Bay of Plenty generating 15 per cent of New Zealand's electricity and attracting $4 billion in energy investments is just one of the new strategies announced by the Bay of Plenty's Regional Governance Group.
The RGG was established to implement and review the Bay of Plenty Regional Development Strategy.
A food strategy, energy strategy and aquaculture strategy was outlined at three RGG forums held earlier this week.

An aquaculuture strategy is one of three strategies outlined by the Bay's Regional Governance Group.

The aquaculture strategy focuses on commercial scale development and the food strategy aims to develop the Bay of Plenty as a centre for excellence in horticulture.
The value of the food sector in the Bay is almost $2 billion, $1.2 billion of which comes from Zespri, according to the RGG.
Fifty per cent of food from the Bay of Plenty is exported to key markets in Australia and Asia.
RGG chairman John Cronin says there is huge potential for aquaculture in the Bay of Plenty.
'Aquaculture is not an easy sector to develop and there are many variables involved. It is important that we position ourselves now with a sensible plan so we can take advantage of the opportunities that arise.
We have a unique and exciting opportunity to become a world class aquaculture region,” says John.
All three strategies will be completed over the next three months.
