Nausea, skin rashes, breathing problems and headaches are among symptoms people can suffer because some orchardists flout rules, says Environment Bay of Plenty pollution prevention manager Bruce Gardner.
EBOP reminds orchardists and contract sprayers to follow the rules and use common sense when spraying this season.
'It's incredibly important when people spray that they follow all necessary regulations but most important is using common sense. If it's windy and spray is likely to drift, then it's not a good time to spray.
Orchardists, particularly kiwifruit growers, are reminded to abide by spraying regulations.
'Most orchardists do follow the rules however there are some who fail to, which can cause problems and possibly result in enforcement action.”
Spray drift is the biggest concern when orchardists breach rules, which can have adverse side effects on the body.
Sprays should only be applied when there is a light breeze blowing away from sensitive areas and only after the adjoining neighbours have been notified, says EBOP.
