Rotorua's air quality exceeded national standards seven times in June - six times higher than is estimated for an entire year, says Environment Bay of Plenty's water manager Eddie Grogan.
Eddie says the city's air standard was exceeded four times in May this year. The tests are undertaken at a residential site in the western suburbs on Edmund Road, Rotorua.
The figures showed morning and evening domestic fires contributed to the air quality problem, says Eddie.
'It's important for people to remember there are some easy things they can do to reduce air pollution and increase the efficiency of their fires.
'If you're running out of firewood make sure you buy or collect dry wood. Store it in a dry place and try to get it well seasoned before burning. One big contributing factor to the air quality problems is that burning wet wood increases emissions,” says Eddie.
