Rain on the way for Bay

A subtropical low approaching the North Island will bring rain to Tauranga tomorrow and for the rest of the week into the weekend.

A weatherwatch is in force for the Western Bay of Plenty as there is a chance of heavy rain reaching warning criteria.

The MetService says the heaviest falls are expected tomorrow and Friday in eastern parts of Northland, northern Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula.

The watch is for the possibility that rainfall accumulations may approach warning amounts, greater than 65mm in 12 hours, about eastern parts.

In addition, the MetService says the watch is also for the possibility that easterly gales could approach severe gales in exposed parts of Northland and Auckland from Thursday evening until Friday night.

People in these areas are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts in case any parts of this watch are upgraded to a warning.

The low should move away to the east on Monday, followed by a disturbed westerly flow.

Having a sub-tropical low at the beginning of August is very unusual indeed. The climate has gone to the pack!! What have the Met guys got to say?
