Tauranga City Council is making a concerted effort to clean up the sea lettuce from the harbour this year, but it's not prepared to address every nook and cranny.
Avenues resident Hylton Rhodes is annoyed by the council's inaction in the Waimapu Estuary and is particularly perturbed he can't swim there.
'It's horrible to have to look out at the bloody awful mess outside from the sea lettuce scourge. It is much worse this year. Last year I was able to swim there.”
Hylton says Tauranga City Council has informed him that they won't be clearing the estuary of sea lettuce.
'They are going down with their digger to remove it from near Fergusson Park, Kulim Park, Memorial Park and Tye Park in Welcome Bay, but they won't be removing any from here.”
Hylton says he was told the council was only removing the infestations from beaches where there is public access.
'I'm not happy about it. This weed is a huge problem – much worse than council thinks.”
