Fine skies but chilly nights

A high pressure weather system will bring sunshine to Tauranga this week – but it will be accompanied by cold and frosty nights.

The MetService is predicting sunny skies from today through until Saturday with temperatures sitting around the 15 degree mark.

Cold and frosty mornings are forecast for this week.

Overnight lows in Tauranga will be below 10 degrees as temperatures vary from four to eight degrees, according to the weather organisation's website.

Meteorologist John Law says the weather will quieten down as a large area of high pressure pushes its way across New Zealand.

'Although we are experiencing some sunnier days and lighter winds with this high pressure, we will pay for it with cold and frosty nights.

He says although the worst of the cold outbreak is over, some snow is still likely to fall to quite low levels around the North Island.

'Expect snow down to 200 to 300 metres in places especially on the Rimutakas and about the Central Plateau.”

John says cold air is expected to remain over New Zealand at the start of the week so temperatures will lift slowly towards the end of the week.
