Chilly nights and frosts ahead

Weather experts are predicting a quiet week after last week's storm, but warn lingering cold air will help maintain frosty conditions in many places.

Temperatures in Tauranga are dropping with overnight lows around six degrees Celsius and daily highs sitting in the low teens.

MetService media and communications meteorologist Dan Corbett says mostly clear skies, light winds and in some places extensive snow cover will be the perfect recipe for night-time cooling, meaning morning frosty conditions.

'A broad southwest flow will cover much of the country for most of the week so there won't be any dramatic warm ups. This means snow that has accumulated will take a bit longer to thaw.

'Any daytime melting could also lead to some very icy conditions on untreated roads as moisture refreezes overnight.”

Dan says Tauranga will be mostly dry and fine with sunny spells thought until Wednesday.

He warns a new weather system will spread some easterly rain across northern New Zealand towards the end of the week.

'For Queenstown Winter Festival there will be sunny days with light winds around Queenstown, as well as a great snow base.”
