'No danger' over cliff face slips

Hundreds of cubic metres of dirt has been cleared from Te Puna Station Road after cliff face slips at the weekend.

Speed restrictions are in place along the road just past Waipuna Hospice but Inroads' spokesman Peter Crean says there is little danger to motorists.

'I would say there is little risk with this, but there is always a chance with these cliff faces,” says Peter.

'We'll get a Geotech engineer to take a look for us and we'll be assessing it to see what we can do to prevent it from coming down again.”

Excavators and trucks worked during the weekend to clear the road after the slip on Friday, and Peter says very little fell into the river.

'We've probably only removed about a truck load of dirt from the river banks, but there was 400 cubic meters sitting on the road, which was removed on Saturday.”

Te Puna Station Road was closed last year due to slips in a similar area.

'The cliff is holding up pretty well because the slip on Friday afternoon was actually dry when it came down.

'It looked fairly stable in wet weather too because only a few wheelbarrows of slushy stuff has come down the cliff face since then.”

You won't catch me driving that road, looks like lots of loose dirt waiting to come down and push a car straight into the river!
